Tell Dick’s Sports -> Listen to Ann Arbor. NO GAS in new Ann Arbor store.

Dick’s Sporting Goods is planning to build a new store in Ann Arbor that ignores the city’s climate action plan to reach carbon neutrality. Ann Arbor’s A2ZERO plan explicitly states that fossil fuel, such as natural gas, in new construction is incompatible with this goal, and that all new construction should be all-electric, heated with high-efficiency electric heat pumps. Yet Dick's plans to heat with gas.

Almost all new developments in Ann Arbor are being built all-electric.

Several local climate advocacy organizations have urged Dick's Sporting Goods to use electric heat pumps instead of natural gas, but the company has not responded.

Please sign this petition to urge Dick's Sporting Goods to adopt high-efficiency electric heat pumps in their new store and to support a greener future.

Tell Dick's Sports - NO GAS heat in new Ann Arbor store

Dick’s Sporting Goods is planning to build a new store in Ann Arbor that ignores the city’s climate action plan to reach carbon neutrality by 2030. Ann Arbor’s A2ZERO plan explicitly states that fossil fuel, such as natural gas, in new construction is incompatible with this goal, and that all new construction should be heated with high-efficiency electric heat pumps. Yet Dick's plans to heat with gas.

Building this new store with a high-efficiency heat pump system provides a perfect opportunity for Dick’s Sporting Goods to demonstrate their seriousness about cutting carbon emissions and preserving local air quality.  Transitioning from gas to electric heating reflects a commitment to environmental stewardship – a value we in Ann Arbor hold dear. It will help them retain their goodwill in our community.

We call on Dick’s Sporting Goods to reconsider their plans for burning gas for heating their new Ann Arbor store and instead opt for a heat pump system. This decision would follow a standard many other developers are already following. Almost all new developments in Ann Arbor are building all-electric in compliance with our carbon neutrality goals.

I urge Dick's Sporting Goods to adopt electric heat pump heating in their new Ann Arbor store.
